The problem
Calorie tracking works, but people quit because logging is tedious: searching databases, weighing food, typing every ingredient. SlimAI needed logging to take seconds. It also needed a business model where the cost of every AI request is covered.
What I built
- Photo logging. Snap a meal, and the app returns calories, macros and ingredients. The user can edit anything before saving.
- Voice and typed logging. Say or type what you ate in plain words.
- A body-fat estimate from a photo, and an AI coach with a weekly analysis of the user’s progress.
- Adaptive daily goals that adjust as the user progresses.
- Subscriptions with a free tier: three photo scans a day and unlimited typed entries.
- Seven languages: English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Dutch and Arabic.
How I approached it
Trust through editing.
AI will misread some meals. Every result is editable, so a miss costs the user two taps, not their trust.
AI cost tied to revenue.
Photo scans are the expensive feature, so free users get three a day. The count is enforced on the server, not the phone, so it can’t be reset by reinstalling. Heavy use leads to a subscription instead of a bigger bill.
Fast, frequent releases.
Separate staging and production builds let fixes and features go out regularly without risking live users.
